INK EXPLORATIONS - a WESLEY TONGSON retrospective

Ink painting is one of China’s greatest artistic and cultural achievements. Closely aligned to the practice of calligraphy where the brush and ink are inextricably linked, ink painting has a long and venerable tradition. It is a sophisticated and nuanced art form, which can bring tremendous satisfaction to the artist and lifelong pleasure to the viewer.

Wesley Tongson’s creative exploration was deeply tied to tradition and innovation, and ink in its many variations. Although he actively participated in group exhibitions and solo shows in the ten years from 1985 to 1995, he worked increasingly in solitude from then onwards. Few people other than his family knew of his continued accomplishments and experiments in ink, especially his large-scale finger paintings.

This book is produced on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition of Hong Kong artist Wesley Tongson at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, 11-23 November 2014. The exhibition traces Tongson's obsession in ink art in the past 30 years. He uses ink as the primary medium and continues to explore a variety of methods and their effects, serving to find the expression of his true voice.

Includes Wesley Tongson's biography and plates.
